I first heard this song, “Little Lion Man” by Mumford and Sons, about a month ago and since then, it has been wearing my iPod thin. With the combination of banjos, acoustic guitars, and a catchy chorus that sings, “it was not your fault but mine / and it was your heart on the line /I really fucked it up this time, didn’t I my dear?”, it’s hard not to find yourself singing along and stomping your foot!
“Little Lion Man” is the first single from their debut album, “Sigh No More” and is a great introductory song into the sounds of this folk-rockin’ band. Yet I can’t say my love for this song speaks for the entire album. There are a couple of other gems (The Cave, Winter Winds…) on this album that make it worth listening to; unfortunately, there are a few non-memorable songs too. But what these few particular songs lack in strong lyrics and sounds, they make up for in emotion and uniqueness. The video for “Little Lion Man” illustrates this quality I’m talking about; the video’s simplicity lets the emotion in the voice and the passion from the instruments shine through.
Mumford and Sons has been compared to the likes of Fleet Foxes and The Avett Brothers, but they are, for sure, a band of their own with a unique sound that mixes different off-shoots of folk music. I definitely see potential and look forward to hearing some more from this band; for now, I will keep “Little Lion Man” on re-play and continue to get the urge to grab a beer at my local pub.
